Located at the Medical School of the University of Lisbon, the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) is an Associated Laboratory of the National Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES). IMM is mainly supported through public funds attributed by the MCTES and by the European Union (POCTI and FEDER). The research expenditure includes additional funds obtained from peer reviewed grants (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, European Commission, Charities) and industrial partnerships. The aim of the institute is to foster basic, clinical and translational biomedical research. Presently, the R&D activities that take place at the IMM are focused on 3 major programmes: Cell and Developmental Biology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases and Neurosciences.

The IMM is dedicated to the research of the human genome, having as an objective to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of disease, to generate new predictive tests, to improve new means of diagnosis and to develop new therapeutic approaches.
The Cell and Developmental Biology programme is focused on the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the organization and regulation of the expression of the genome.
The Immunology and Infectious Diseases programme is particularly dedicated to translational biomedical research in the area of the HIV / AIDS, chronic viral hepatitis and autoimmune diseases.
The Neurosciences Programme aims to contribute to the knowledge of the nervous system, either in the presence or in the absence of disease.
The Oncology Programme studies the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
