The Bacteriological Institute Câmara Pestana dates back to 1892 and was integrated in the Universidade de Lisboa in 1911. It develops work in several domains of public health, namely in diphtheria, streptococci’s, clinical microbiology and analysis of biology products. It is the national lab for the production of the anti-tuberculosis vaccine and the institution responsible for the human anti-rabies program in Portugal.
