Higher education in Dental Medicine was implemented in Portugal in 1975, with the creation of the Higher Education School of Dental Medicine of Lisbon. This School’s curriculum organization and the training of the first group of 13 professors received a valuable contribution from the Dentistry Faculty of the University of Bergen.
The Higher Education School of Dental Medicine was integrated in the Universidade de Lisboa in 1991, and its name was changed to Faculty of Dental Medicine.
Initially, only 16 students were admitted in the 4th year of the programme, after concluding the 3rd year in the Faculty of Medicine. Nowadays, 48 students are admitted each year in the 1st year of the dental medicine programme. Curriculum organization keeps the same format, with the changes needed to improve teaching quality.
The aims of this Faculty are teaching and researching in the fields of Dental Medicine and Oral Health, preparing high quality dental surgeons.
